Aryeh Frankfurter - In Their Footsteps
|
|
The Nyckelharpa or “Keyed Fiddle” is a distinctively Swedish instrument with a history dating back to the 1400s. Bowed like a violin, 3 rows of keys run up and down the neck. Tapping a key moves a wooden dowel which in turn hits a string, shortening it to create a specific pitch- just like a finger moving up and down the neck of a violin. A standard nyckelharpa has a total of 16 strings but only four of them can be touched by the bow (three strings have keys assigned to them and the fourth is an unkeyed “drone”). The other 12 strings are not bowed but rather vibrate “sympathetically”to the keyed tones or notes made by the player, thus creating the nyckelharpa’s distinctive sound.
I first encountered the nyckelharpa while touring in Sweden1995, but did not purchase one until 2005. In 2007, I began to play it in earnest and it has since become a central part of my musical endeavors. You can learn more about the instrument by visiting www.nyckelharpa.org
About the Music: For this CD, my 5th featuring the nyckelharpa, I challenged myself to gain a deeper grasp of the music of the instrument’s country of origin: Sweden. I chose these tunes simply because I liked them and thought they would appeal to a general American audience who might not otherwise be familiar with traditional
Swedish folk music. However, while probably unfamiliar to a typical non-Swedish listener, this is well traversed territory by legions of Swedish folk musicians and by their standards they would be considered popular and oft-played rather than unusual or obscure. But, in my humble opinion, they are popular for a good reason -
they’re great tunes!
I have also endeavored to emulate the “feel” of indigenous players (something, admittedly, that is far from mastered), albeit perhaps more in the vein of contemporary musicians than that of “elder statesmen.” While the arrangements and renditions are original, I deliberately patterned myself after musicians I have listened to and
enjoyed over the past 15 or so years - e.g., Väsen, Frifot, Dråm, Bla Bergens Borduner, and Ola Bäckstrom to name just a few. Hence the title of this CD: to acknowledge following in their footsteps.
A quick word about Polskas: A “polska” is a popular Scandinavian dance, especially in Sweden, and is not to be confused with the homophonic “polka” (note the ‘s’). Polskas are triple metered dances somewhat more akin to waltzes, but with different accents. There are many types and varieties of polskas and they can get quite
exciting and complex. Some, however, would seem just downright strange and rather weird to non-native listeners (or players). The ones recorded here are considered more straightforward examples of this type of dance music.
